Football
The P7 football team plays friendly matches against other schools as well as competing in the N.I Cup, the Cyril Murray Cup and the 5-a-side competition. Football training is on Wednesday afternoons after school. The P6 team also play in the Under-10 cup.
Last Tuesday, some of the football team competed in the annual 5-a-side competition at the Shankill Leisure Centre. The team started well by beating Rosetta 1-0, thanks to a great finish by Thomas Armstrong. Stranmillis were frustrated against Belvoir in their second match and were unable to capitalise on some good chances. The game finished 0-0, as did the third game against Campbell College Junior School. The boys only needed a draw in their final match, against Avoniel, to guarantee qualification for the all Belfast finals. The boys defended well and Thomas Armstrong scored his second goal of the day to win the game 1-0. Stranmillis finished joint 1st in their group with eight points, and will compete in the finals on 27th March. Well done to all the boys involved.
Squad: Patrick Hanna (GK), Ted Linton, Matthew Moran, Thomas Armstrong, Ihan Westerhuis, Isaac Jarman, Adam Simms.
Cross Country
Last Thursday, the Cross Country team competed in the all Belfast finals of the Belfast City Council competition. After winning the South Belfast heat, the girls’ team were hoping to build on their success and qualify for the Northern Ireland finals. Olivia Neill finished 6th and Claire McGurk finished 8th, which is a fantastic achievement considering 107 girls took part in the race. The team finished in 4th place overall out of 15 schools, which was enough to secure qualification for the Northern Ireland finals. The boys’ team put in a great performance, and finished in 6th place overall out of 15 schools. Well done to all the children involved.
