At Stranmillis, we believe in inclusion. Children come to school with a variety of needs. Each child has a right to have those needs identified and met as far as possible within our school.

By recognising those needs and differentiating our resources and practices, we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure our extra-curricular activities are accessible to all.

At Stranmillis we welcome and value all children and strive to provide a happy, inspiring and secure environment in which all our pupils, with guidance and example, will develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and morally.

To achieve this we continue to adapt our systems and structures, curriculum, building, attitude and values in order to make our school an inclusive and welcoming environment.

At times, pupils require additional support to enhance their classroom learning. Our SENCO, Mrs Cromie coordinates the learning support programme and liaises with class teachers and other professionals.

Provision is matched to individual needs and additional learning support is provided through two programmes:

  • Superkids
  • Mathspace

Children benefit from early targeted intervention in literacy and numeracy with a clear focus on learning intentions and outcomes. Activities are fun and achievements are celebrated.

The work of the teaching staff is complemented by Classroom Assistants who are trained to provide Reading Partnership to children from P3-P7.

We rejoice in the richness and diversity of our school community. Newcomer children are welcome and we have a Diversity Coordinator from the Inclusion and Diversity Service who works closely with Mrs Cromie and the class teachers to create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive environment for pupils and parents from all backgrounds and ensure equal access for all.
