Topic Work

September – October: Homes

The children will find out about different types of houses,  the building materials used, houses around the world and animal homes.  We will visit The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum to explore houses long ago.  It would be appreciated if your child could bring in a photogragh of his or her house.  Photographs of building work e.g. extensions in progress would be interesting!

November- December : Light

We will explore sources of light,  shadows, reflective and fluorescent materials in relation to road safety, Diwali Festival of light, Christmas lights, day and night and nocturnal animals.

January – February: Materials

Pupils will investigate the properties of various materials,  sort natural and man-made materials, carry out experiments, explore magnets, observe how materials change with heat e.g. melting chocolate, making bread and watching ice cubes melt.  Your child can bring in an object (natural or man-made) to handle, discuss the properties of and display.

March-April: Spring

We will investigate the season of spring and consider changes in plants, trees, weather and length of daylight.  We will plant seeds, find out about parts of a flower and what is needed for growth.  Pupils will learn about baby animals and study the life cycle of a frog.  We will listen to and discuss the music ‘Spring’ from ‘Vivaldi’s Four Seasons’.    Pupils can bring in spring flowers or photographs of signs  of spring.

May-June: Transport

Children will find out about types of transport, travel and transport in the past and emergency vehicles.  We will discover how objects move and explore programmable devices such as Bee-Bots.  Our role-play area will be a Travel Agency and pupils will decide where  and how to travel.  We will continue to explore road safety.

Our trip to The Transport Museum should prove to be interesting and fun! We hope to have a visit from The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service before the end of term.
