Ards RFC. They were put in a group with Andrews Memorial, Strandtown and Gilnahirk. Andrews Memorial were the opponents in the first game and Adam Simms, Caleb Bowden and Finn Hagan scored the tries in a 3-0 victory. The team played some great rugby, defending well and putting in some great tackles on their opposite numbers.

The second match against Gilnahirk was much tighter, with both teams passing the ball excellently. However, Ted Linton scored the only try of the game in the second half, showing great strength to break through the Gilnahirk defensive line and win the game for Stranmillis. In the final match against Strandtown, Finn Hagan intercepted a pass on the halfway line within the first minute of the game and was unstoppable as he headed for the try line to score his second of the tournament. Patrick Hanna almost doubled the lead after he made an excellent run which ended with him being tackled and put into touch less than a metre from the line. Stranmillis started the second half brightly and continued to press for another try which came less than minute after the restart when Adam Simms topped a great performance at out-half by scoring his second of the day. Strandtown responded with a try just before the final whistle, but it was too late and Stranmillis won the game 2-1.

The boys played extremely well and were delighted to win all three games against some very good opposition. Well done to all the boys involved.

Squad: Caleb Bowden, Patrick Hanna, Ted Linton, Thomas Armstrong, Adam Simms, Finn Hagan, Matthew Moran, Isaac Jarman, Simon Gibson, William Skelton, Louis Fitpatrick.

While final figures have still to be confirmed, it is clear that more than £1,000 has been raised. In the third term we will bring you details of an exciting new project that the PTA is undertaking to further develop and enhance the educational provision for our pupils. The £1000 raised on Saturday will provide a great start to the fund-raising for this project.

The winner of the food hamper was James McGleenan.

A, along with MCB, Inchmarlo and Strandtown 2nds. The first match against MCB was a close game and both teams defended well. Neither side was able to score that all important goal and the game finished 0-0. Against Inchmarlo, the team worked extremely hard and played well against a skilful opponent. However, Inst were excellent and won the game 3-0, despite some superb goalkeeping from Andrew McMurray. In the final game against Strandtown 2nds, the boys were determined to get the three points. Goals from Thomas Armstrong, Jack McGurk and Matthew Moran secured a 3-0 victory. Thanks to their superior goal difference over MCB, Stranmillis finished 2nd in their group and qualified for a semi-final match against Strandtown 1sts.

The semi-final started well, with Thomas Armstrong taking the lead for Stranmillis in the 3rd minute. Unfortunately, Strandtown equalised soon after, and scored a second goal late in the game. The match finished 2-1 to Strandtown, but the boys gave a great account of themselves and were unlucky not to force the game into extra-time. Gilnahirk were the opponents in the play-off for 3rd place and once again, Stranmillis took the lead through Thomas Armstrong. Gilnahirk equalised with minutes to go and the game finished 1-1. The “golden goal” rule was to decide the match, but it wasn’t scored by Stranmillis and the game finished 2-1 to Gilnahirk. The team finished in 4th place overall, which is an excellent achievement. The boys have been excellent representatives for their school throughout the hockey season. Well done to all the boys involved.

At the end of the race, the girls were presented with a shield for winning the Co.Antrim section.
GIRLS’ HOCKEY REPORT

Last Friday, the girls’ hockey team competed in the McCoy Cup hockey competition. Stranmillis were drawn in Pool B along with MCB Prep 1sts, Ben Madigan 1sts, Victoria Prep 2nds and Strandtown 2nds. In the first game, the girls played some great hockey and beat Victoria 2-0. Mia Magee scored both goals. The second match, against Strandtown, was a close game and both teams had chances to score. However, a clever corner and pass by Shannon McGeown-Gilmore set up Mia Magee for her third of the competition and the winning goal. The girls’ next opponents were a good MCB team who had an early chance to score, but couldn’t hit the target. Minutes later, Mia Magee was on target once again, after some good midfield play by Olivia Copeland and Olivia Neill. Stranmillis then doubled their lead when Mia was on hand to score her 5th goal of the day. MCB scored a late consolation goal, but Stranmillis won the game 2-1. In their final group game, the girls beat a solid Ben Madigan team 1-0, with Mia Magee scoring the goal again!

The team finished top of Pool B with 12 points, the only team to achieve maximum points in the group stages. This meant a semi-final against the runners-up from Pool A, Strandtown 1sts. The match was a very close affair, with both teams attacking well. Unfortunately it was Strandtown who got the break through with minutes to go and the game finished 1-0. After a 3rd place play-off defeat to MCB, the team finished 4th overall, which is a fantastic achievement. Throughout the season, the girls have represented the school excellently and have worked very hard to improve their hockey skills. Congratulations to all the girls involved.

Squad: Fiona Murray, Shannon McGeown-Gilmore, Alice Blease, Ellie Hamilton, Olivia Copeland, Olivia Neill, Susie Loane, Mia Magee, Claire McGurk, Joni Stafford.

Season’s results: Won 7, Drawn 7, Lost 4.
