ROAD TRIP, PENALTIES AND KFC!

The boys’ football team travelled to Strabane last Tuesday to play Sion Mills Primary in the N.I Cup. After a long bus journey, Stranmillis started slowly and conceded an early goal after ten minutes. The home side played attractive passing football, and were unfortunate that they didn’t increase their lead before the break. Determined to get back into the game, Stranmillis started the second half well and created some good chances. Five minutes after the restart, Ihan Westerhuis hit a speculative shot from just over the halfway line, which bounced over the head of the opposition goalkeeper and into the roof of the net. Stranmillis continued to push forward and Finn Hagan was on hand to put the visitors into the lead after a goalmouth scramble. Sion Mills responded almost immediately and the game finished 2-2.

Both teams created chances in extra-time, but neither side was able to make a breakthrough. The game had to be decided on penalties as there are no replays in the N.I Cup competition. Ihan Westerhuis calmly slotted the first penalty into the corner of the net. Sion Mills missed their first attempt, and successful penalties from Thomas Armstrong and Andrew McMurray saw Stranmillis progress to the next round of the cup. Before making the long trip home, the boys enjoyed the traditional post match meal in KFC, where their knowledge and experience of the KFC menu was remarkable! Well done to all the boys involved.
