Welcome to our Tuesday Notes page.  We make every effort to send notes to parents only on a Tuesday - that way, our parents don't have to check bags every day.  However, read the note below, especially if you want even less paper coming home!

Note: if there's a return slip, just print this page, complete and return to your child's class teacher as normal.

Hot off the Press!

17 June 2008

Dear Parent

Firstly, our Principal, Tom Stewart, has won the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award at the regional finals of the UK Teaching Awards.  Mr Stewart received his award at the Waterfront Hall yesterday – a lovely occasion and one where, rather unusually, we witnessed lots of teachers rendered (almost) speechless!

In his acceptance speech, Mr Stewart thanked the, literally, thousands of children and parents, and the hundreds of colleagues, that he has had the privilege of working with in his (still continuing) 36 year teaching career.

And more good news this morning…  He has been shortlisted for the National Award, the judging for which will take place next week.

This is wonderful news for Mr Stewart and our school.  There is no doubt the pivotal role Stranmillis Primary has had in moulding Mr Stewart’s principles and actions as a teacher and a leader.  We wish him well for next week.

School Magazine

I am delighted to announce the arrival of the school magazine for 2008.  The PTA Committee has been working tirelessly over the last few months, and especially the last few weeks, to ensure the magazine meets everyone’s high expectations.  Having seen the final proof, I know you’ll find it a vibrant, interesting and very essential component of your coffee table, desk, magazine rack, holiday reading.

Please, please, please support the school and the PTA by purchasing your copy as soon as possible.  The magazine will be available for purchase in the playground at ‘drop-off’ and ‘pick-up’ times, from tomorrow, Wednesday.

Thanking you all for you continuing support.

School BBQ 2008
Friday, 13 June 2008 – school playground, weather permitting!

Dear Parent

Once again, we intend to host a BBQ for the whole school.  We have been lucky with the weather two years in a row, so don’t uncross your ‘Sports Day’ crossings too soon!

Children have already indicated their preference for a burger / hot dog (including a vegetarian option).  They will also receive a drink and ice-cream, as well as the chance of playing some playground games hosted by the Primary 7 children.

The cost of the BBQ will be £2 and it will replace school dinners on Friday.  However, should you not wish your child to take part, please let the class teacher know and a school dinner will be provided.  Packed lunches will also be supervised for those preferring that option.

Please note that dinner ‘tickets’ already purchased for Friday will count towards the BBQ.

I very much hope that you will permit your child to take part – and promise to do my very best on the cooking front!

Yours faithfully

TESCO COMPUTERS FOR SCHOOLS 2008

Dear Parents

Our school is delighted to be participating in the 17th year of the Tesco Computers for Schools.

From Monday 3 March until Sunday 11 May 2008 shoppers will be able to collect one voucher for every £10 spent in a single transaction at any Tesco store or petrol filling station.

Thanks to you we collected 19,998 vouchers last year and we were able to purchase some excellent ICT and musical resources for use throughout school. We would be delighted if you, your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues would help us to collect the vouchers again this year.

Please send your vouchers to your child's teacher or post them in the Tesco box in the foyer.

Thank you and Good Collecting !!

School Security – an update…

13 May 2008

Dear Parent

I wrote to you some months back regarding a revision to the school’s security system, including times that doors and gates would be opened and locked.

The door access system has been upgraded, but we have been having teething problems!  As a result, the front door may not be locked, or indeed open, at the times we intend it to be.

I realise that this may cause some confusion and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I would urge all of you to make an attempt to ‘report’ to either me, Miss Robinson (Room 1) or Mrs Herron (Secretary) on entering the building.  Between 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm, Miss Conway will be in the office.  This is also important when parents are delayed in collecting children at closing times; please let a member of staff know that you have arrived.

Thank you for your continued patience; we are doing our best, but these maintenance issues are beyond our control.  Unfortunately, the fencing adjacent to the playground and at the rear of the school which was deemed unsatisfactory in the original survey has not been included in the Board’s updated provision at this stage.

I will be in touch again with more precise information on times and details when I can confirm them.  In the meantime, thank you for your patience.

Yours faithfully
